How to Store Dog Food

These days, you may feel like your dog eats like a king, what with his special prescription food to his tasty dog food toppers. But as his menu gets wider, your storage options seem to be getting smaller. After all, it can be tricky determining where to store your pup’s food—especially if you buy in bulk.

So, what is the best way to store dog food? Follow our guide for the best dog food storage ideas and recommendations.

How To Store Dog Food

Our seven tips make it easier than ever to find short- and long-term food storage for man’s best friend.

  • Determine the Expiration Date

You wouldn’t want to eat food past its expiration date; your dog doesn’t, either! Before storing dog food, check the best by or expiration date to ensure you’re not holding onto food that’s past its prime. If the dog food has passed the date, dispose of it, but if it’s only near the date, use that food first and set a reminder for yourself to toss it if you don’t get through it in time.

  • Stock Up On Sealed Containers

If you’re wondering how to store dog food long term, we recommend keeping it in its original, unopened packaging. Whether it’s in a can or paper bag, that packaging was designed to preserve it for as long as possible.

Alternatively, if you’re looking to store already opened dog food, it’s best to place it in a sealed, air-tight glass or plastic container that won’t let in any moisture. That said, only store already opened dry dog food, as opened wet food will spoil after a few days—even if you refrigerate it.

  • Store in a Cool, Dry Place

If you’re searching for a place to store your pup’s grub, choose a spot that’s cool and dry. Some people like to keep their dog food in the kitchen pantry, while others store theirs in the laundry room or garage.

Avoid areas that attract moisture, as well as spaces where the temperature rises above 80 degrees F, as those situations are invitations for mold and mildew to grow. What’s more, moisture and heat can cause the ingredients in the food to break down.

  • Avoid Pests (and Pups!)

When choosing where to store your dog food, be mindful of any critters that may break in. We’re talking insects, mice, rats, and yes, even your very own pets like your dog or cat! Consider storing the food in a closed cabinet or on a shelf, and again, make sure the food is properly sealed.

  • Refrigerate Opened Wet Food

When it comes to wet dog food, you’ll want to take extra care when storing it. Once you’ve opened a can of wet dog food, place the remainder in a sealed, air-tight container in the fridge. If you don’t use it after three days, toss it.

As for leaving wet food out in your dog’s bowl, it can spoil if left out, so throw it out if your four-legged friend doesn’t eat it within four hours.

  • Don’t Store Dog Food in Your Storage Unit

While storage units are great for storing all kinds of items, it’s not a good idea to store perishables inside your unit. Some storage facilities may even prohibit it. Instead, keep your dog food in your own home.

  • Inspect Dog Food Before Serving

After storing your dog food for a while, be sure to inspect it before serving it to your pup. If you notice any of the following, trash it and get your dog a new batch:

  • Mold or mildew growing on the food.
  • A rancid or sour odor coming from the food.
  • Soft or mushy pieces of kibble that are usually firm and solid.

If your dog is uninterested in eating the food or becomes ill afterward, this could be another sign that the food is no longer fresh. Be sure to consult your veterinarian if your dog experiences vomiting, diarrhea, or other symptoms that could be linked to spoiled food.
