• Moving Tips for Stress-Free Moving

While packing up and relocating can sometimes feel like an uphill battle, we’re here to help make changing homes a stress-free moving and storage experience. Below, we’ll discuss our top 10 tips for stress-free moving, from how to pack efficiently for a move to what to look for in a storage unit.

Whether you are moving in summer or the dead of winter, follow our moving tips and tricks to make moving day as stress-free as possible.

    Tip #1: Plan Ahead

Our number one moving and packing tip involves planning. The more prepared you are for hiccups and surprises, the less stressed you will feel if a situation arises.

Begin by making a list of everything you need to take care of between now and moving day. Try to think of every last detail, from changing your mailing address to turning on your utilities.

Once you have an idea of everything you need to tackle, start scheduling it into your calendar. This will help give you a big picture idea of what’s ahead of you, but it also lets you break each task into smaller pieces, making it more manageable. With an idea of what you need to address each day, you can begin marking off each responsibility without feeling overwhelmed or stressed.

    Tip #2: Assess Your Belongings

To figure out how to pack for a move, you need to know what you’re working with. Start by taking inventory of everything you need to pack and then decide whether you are taking it directly to your new space or placing it in a storage unit.

While you’re at it, do you see any opportunity to downsize? Is there anything you can sell or donate? Try to avoid bringing items that you no longer use, love, or need to your new location, as they will only take up space. Tip #3: Stock Up On Packing Supplies

Whatever you do, do not underestimate this packing tip for moving. There is nothing worse than sitting down to pack, only to realize you have run out of tape, can’t find your scissors, or forgot to pick up bubble wrap. Figure out what packing supplies you need in advance. You can conveniently purchase packing supplies, such as packing peanuts, cardboard boxes, and shrink wrap online at Stor-It or on-site at our storage facilities.

Tip #4: Reserve Your Storage Unit

A storage unit can give you peace of mind during a big move. If you’re temporarily moving to a smaller space, you might want to put certain pieces of furniture in storage to keep them safe. Or, you might want to keep your belongings in storage until your new home is painted and you’re ready to decorate. Whatever the reason, you’ll find plenty of storage unit options at our Stor-It locations to accommodate your needs.

Do your research and make sure to reserve your storage unit in advance of moving day. Do you need a small unit for just a few items or a huge one to accommodate all your furniture? We offer a wide range of units at our storage facilities, including some as small as a walk-in closet and others large enough to store boats and RVs. We also have friendly and professional on-site managers who can help you with all your storage questions, from determining the right size unit to fit all your items to maximize your storage unit space. You can even tour our units to ensure you choose the best-sized unit.

    Tip #5: Ask for Help

Another extremely important moving tip is to ask for a hand. You don’t have to go at it alone. If your best bud drives a big pickup truck, why not see if you can borrow it for the day? Or maybe your sister is willing to keep an eye on your kids for the afternoon while you pack up. Don’t hesitate to ask your friends, relatives, or neighbors if they are willing to help you when it comes to moving and packing. If you do manage to round up a group to help on moving day, don’t forget to treat them to food and beverages to show your appreciation.

Booking movers is always an option, too. Ask around for recommendations. If you plan to go this route, be sure to book ahead of time to ensure they are available on your moving day.

    Tip #6: Prioritize Your Belongings

When you are ready to start packing up your items, start packing the things you don’t foresee yourself needing in the upcoming days or weeks. For example, if you are moving during the spring or summer, you probably won’t need your ski gear and snow boots for at least a few more months. You can also start packing up your guest room, garage, shed, and rec room, as there’s a good chance you won’t need anything in those areas until you’re settled into your new place.

Set aside the items that you use most, such as your toiletries, everyday shoes, and workout clothes, and pack those last. You can even reserve a few boxes that you don’t pack until the last minute.

To help you keep track of your items, be sure to label each box. Indicate what items are in each box and where they should go in the house. This way, you won’t wind up with your gardening tools in your bedroom or your kitchenware in the garage.

    Tip #7: Check the Forecast

Whether you are moving in the spring or winter, weather can throw a wrench into your plans. In the days leading up to your move-out day, begin following the weather forecast. If there is snow, rain, or a heat wave in the weather predictions, you may want to shift your schedule. Rain and snow can bring wet and slippery conditions, while a heat wave can be dangerous if you’re exerting yourself in the hot sun all day long. If you have some flexibility with your dates, choose a day with clear skies and comfortable temperatures.

Tip #8 Protect Your Belongings Against the Elements

Don’t let Mother Nature interfere with your items. If it’s a scorcher on moving day, you won’t want to keep your belongings baking in a hot car or van all day, as the heat could damage your items. To best protect your goods from the heat, be sure to drop them off at your new place or storage unit as soon as possible.

On the other hand, if there is any chance that it may rain or snow, stock up on some extra blankets or towels to cover your items. After all, the last thing you’ll want to see is a fresh layer of snow on top of your antique dresser.

    Tip #9 Keep Comfortable

Once you have an idea of what the weather will be like on moving day, plan accordingly. Are you moving in July or August? One of the top summer moving tips is to make sure you have plenty of water on hand for you and those helping you move. Wear sunscreen and provide a shady spot for breaks.

Alternatively, if you are moving in the spring, remember that temperatures can still be chilly depending on where you live. Since you will likely be traipsing in and out of the house all day with the doors open, consider turning off the central heat and setting up a space heater in an area where you and your movers can gather to warm up. Keep some extra hats or gloves on hand, and serve hot chocolate or hot cider to ensure everyone is warm and comfortable.

    Tip #10 Relax

Moving is only as stressful as you make it. Aside from planning ahead and following our moving tips, make time for yourself to unwind and relax. Relax with a drink, go for a walk, or curl up with a good book. When you’re calm, cool, and collected, you’ll be better prepared for whatever moving adventures come your way.
