• Temporary Storage During a Renovation

If you’re a homeowner, there’s a good chance you have a lot of renovations on your to-do list. Maybe you’re dreaming of putting bamboo flooring in your living room, knocking down the wall between your kitchen and dining room, or remodeling your bedroom. But while home renovations can certainly be exciting, they also require a lot of planning.

If you’re currently living in your home, you’ll need to make arrangements to store all your belongings before you begin your renovations. For instance, where will you keep your couch, coffee table, and entertainment console if you’re putting in new flooring in your living room? Or, if you’re expanding your kitchen and dining room area, what will you do with your dining room table and all your pots and pans?

That’s why you need a home renovation storage plan! If you don’t have one, we’ve got your back. In our renovation storage guide below, we’ll cover some helpful tips that will make your home makeover run smoothly.

    Renovation Storage Tips

Before grabbing your power tools and going to town on your space, follow these simple steps to help you prepare for your renovation:

Take Inventory of Your Renovation Space

What kind of furniture and objects live in your renovation area? Do you have couches and tables or a closet full of knickknacks? Once you know what you’re working with, you’ll be better prepared to figure out what kind of storage supplies and space you’ll need.

    Stock Up on Storage Supplies

Now that you know what you’ll need to temporarily relocate, you can determine what supplies to purchase. For example, if you’re only moving furniture, think about investing in furniture covers and blankets, along with handcarts, dollies, and lifting straps to help physically relocate them.

Alternatively, if you have a bunch of smaller items, look into cardboard boxes or plastic bins with lids, which make it easier to move, stack, and store for the short term. If you go the cardboard box route, be sure to label the outside so you know what items are inside, and seal the top with some packing tape.

Determine How Much Storage Space You Need

How many items need a temporary home? Are we talking about three rooms’ worth of furniture and belongings? Or do you only need space the size of a closet to accommodate your things? With a better idea of how much space your items will require, it’ll be easier for you to begin brainstorming renovation storage solutions.

    Temporary Storage for Renovation Options

Once you’ve completed the steps listed above, it’s time to find temporary storage during your renovation! For inspiration, check out some of our recommendations:

    A Short-Term Storage Unit

A short-term storage unit is perhaps one of the easiest renovation storage options. For starters, you can find units ranging in all sorts of sizes, from 5×10 to 10×30 and beyond, so you’re sure to find one that can easily fit all your belongings. What’s more, when you rent with Stor-It, you can sign up for a flexible month-to-month lease, so you’ll only pay for storage space where and when you need it.

You can even find climate-controlled units, which maintain a set temperature and humidity range at all times. This is especially helpful if you have sensitive items that can’t be exposed to extreme elements.

    Spare Room in Your Home

If you have a spare room like a guest bedroom or empty space in your garage, these are other ideal places to relocate your items. Simply rearrange the furniture in there so it can accommodate your relocated furniture and boxes. It may not look pretty, but this is a convenient (and free!) option that makes for a great temporary solution for storage during your renovation.

A Friend or Family Member’s Home

Another option is to ask your friends or family if they’re willing to offer up some space in their own homes for your belongings. Maybe your sister has an empty basement without any furniture, or your best friend has an office space that he hasn’t been using.

If your loved ones let you use their extra space for your home renovation storage needs, just be sure to thank them and show your appreciation—a nice bottle of wine or some homemade cookies go a long way!
