Choosing the Right Size Storage Unit | Infographic

how to choose the right size storage unit

When confronted with the issue of a cluttered home or workspace, a self-storage unit is often the easiest and best solution. This solution, however, is never “one size fits all” and finding an appropriately sized unit can be one of the most difficult steps in the process.

Why Storage Unit Size Matters

Finding the right sized self-storage unit is important because, in the world of self-storage units, bigger equals more money. Before just going with the biggest available unit, take the time to inventory what you actually need to store. Once you have figured out the items to be stored, you can choose the appropriate unit for your needs. To help make this process as easy for you as possible, we’ve put together this simple self-storage size guide.

What Size Storage Unit Do I Need?

5’x5’ Storage Unit

This is roughly the size of a walk-in closet. A unit this size is perfect for storing small tools or seasonal items you don’t need on-hand at all times. A small unit like this is also great for storing mattresses, dressers, or even just boxes of seasonal items.

5’x10’ Storage Unit

This space is roughly the size of a mid-sized bedroom and is the ideal solution for someone looking to store a room’s worth of items. Whether you’re remodeling or packing up a dorm room for the summer, this space should fit your needs perfectly. Whether you need a space for furniture like dressers and large chairs or big screen TVs and lamps, this space should work wonders for you.

10’x10’ Storage Unit

This is often considered a medium size in the self storage world. It’s about the size of a standard family room. This self storage unit sits at 100 square feet and is the go-to “apartment storage” unit. If you need a space to keep your large furniture such as couches, desks, or dressers, this unit is the one you want.

10’x15’ Storage Unit

A storage unit this size is spacious enough to house the belongings of a trio of bedrooms. If you’ve got larger items such as dressers or pianos that need a temporary home, the large storage units should do the trick. A 10’x15’ space is also appropriate for bicycles, wardrobes, and large appliances like washing machines and dishwashers.

10’x20’ Storage Unit

For the family looking to store a home’s worth of belongings, a 10’x20’ storage unit will be exactly what you need. This huge storage unit can house roughly five bedrooms worth of items and is perfect for large appliances such as washing machines. A 10’x20’ unit can also easily accommodate large furniture like king and queen-sized beds and couch sets.

10’x30’ Storage Unit

If you truly need the maximum space possible, this unit covers a whopping 300 square feet of space! If you’re in need of a place to store five to seven rooms worth of items, large furniture, or even a vehicle, this unit will serve you well. A 10’x30’ space is the ideal solution for anyone looking to store numerous large items.

Once you’ve figured out which storage unit is right for your needs, all that’s left to do is packing your items and bringing them to the self-storage facility that’s most convenient for you!

  1. My husband and I are going on a three-month internship this summer and we don’t want to pay rent on our apartment while we are gone, so we need to find a self-storage unit where we can store our furniture and other belongings. You make a great point that we should look for the right sized storage unit so that we won’t spend extra money. I think that a 10 by 10 could be great for us because it is the size of a standard family room and we should be able to fit all of our things in one room.
